Is the Intermittent Fasting Diet Worth Trying?

    Dr Joanna McMillan

The practice of fasting for health or spiritual reasons is as old as the hills. Pretty much every religion and many Eastern philosophies, have forms of fasting. Typically fasting is promoted as a means of discipline, reducing gluttony and for focusing the mind.

More recently fasting has been promoted as a means to weight loss. The intermittent fasting diet typically involves eating regular, healthy food 5 days a week and fasting on two non-consecutive days. The fasting days can simply involve skipping breakfast that day and eating a regular lunch and dinner.

Dr. Joanna McMillan on Healthy Frozen Meals

It’s not always that way. When I’m organised, there is food in the fridge and I roughly know what I’m going to whip up, getting in the kitchen is a pleasure.

So, what to do on the nights where my enthusiasm to cook is under par? I outsource. I want someone else to do the cooking for me. But, I still want to eat well. Fortunately there are some great options for ready-made meals and you’ve already guessed no doubt that Dietlicious gets my tick of approval. But why?

  5. Dr. Joanna: Why it’s OK to Be Hungry

Dr. Joanna McMillan on Why it's Ok to Always Feel Hungry

I’ve been amazed at how many people over the years have told me they aren’t really ever hungry. But when you think about it, perhaps it’s not so surprising. We have access to food pretty much 24/7 and there is little risk that it is going to run out. This  is a relatively new situation for the human race and one that we are not collectively coping with terribly well.

If you never truly feel hungry you are most likely overeating or at the very least you are not responding to your body’s cues to eat, but when society norms tell you to – does 1 o’clock mean lunchtime regardless of how hungry you are? Does 3pm signal a cuppa with a biscuit or some other sweet treat for afternoon tea?

Feeling hungry is a good thing though. In fact, I would even go so far as to say it’s essential for optimal health and wellbeing. Here’s why.
