Dietlicious is joining the fight against cardiovascular disease by reducing sodium content

We’re making our healthy meals even healthier for your heart! Dietlicious is proud to be the first healthy ready-meal maker to switch to a potassium-enriched salt. We now use Heart Salt, an Australian brand of low sodium, high potassium salt that contains 56% less sodium than regular salt.

The reason we wanted to expand our range of low salt meals is that consuming too much regular salt is bad for our health. It's linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and other health complications. Cardiovascular related conditions contribute to 44% of all deaths in Australia.

The link between heart health + salt

Australians currently consume around twice the recommended daily amount of sodium, in the form of salt (sodium chloride). This is problematic as too much sodium is related to a whole range of health complications, most notably high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, stroke but also kidney disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, gastric cancer, osteoporosis, Meniere’s disease and dementia.

Currently one third of adults suffer from hypertension and 44% of all deaths in Australia are caused by a combination of heart disease, hypertension and stroke.

One simple and cost effective measure to improve our health is to reduce our sodium intake but it’s not that easy to avoid. The majority of dietary sodium comes from eating packaged and prepared foods. Regular salt (containing high sodium content) is added during the manufacturing process to enhance flavour, preserve foods and extend shelf life. It’s not just salty foods that contain added salt.
